Flowering Trees of Bangalore an interactive interface on Flowering trees of Bangalore to be installed at a museum.

 

About the project 

Bangalore’s charm as a Garden City may have diminished. However, some of the trees that perhaps earned its name are still to be seen and cherished. For those of us who would want to simply immerse ourselves at that moment appreciating the beauty of each of these flowering trees that dot Bangalore, it does not matter . we will continue to do so. For those who would want to have more information about these trees, Here are pictures for 56 species that are often seen. This includes similar/related species that are dealt with under the main species.

32"inch Interactive Display

 

Objective

  • Our ability to process visual information is rapid, hence the attempt is to display information graphically so one doesn’t spend more time at the installation just figuring out the interface.

  • To provide information at a glance.

  • Use Proximity, Similarity, Continuity, and Connection Principle of Gestalts to group different dimensions.

  • Making search process simple and easy to use by giving connections to multiple dimensions.

 Data Analysis and Categorisation

Data was plotted, explored, and organised in MS Excel and Sketch App. Grouping the collected data into  Common name, Flowering season, Origin and Shape dimensions. Further the flowers were categorised into different 6 distinct shapes to make the identification easy and quick.

 Visualisation Structure

Each dimension forms a section in the information visualisation such that a recipient gets the information of that particular flower or flower family at a glance. It displays the tree height flower details and description. The semicircular structure is inspired from shape of a dome shaped flower.

 Home Screen

The home screen page shows all the information at a glance. The recipients can select any dimension (Shape of flower, name, image, location of origin) depending on their knowledge and get further information on it. It gives a short description of the flowering trees of Bangalore.

 Shape Selection

If the users don't know the name and exact image of the flower from the list of flowers at the bottom but have a rough idea of flower shape. They can select the shape and get information on all the flowers in that category.

Flower Image Selection

The fastest search is through image only if the recipient knows how the flower looks. Click on the image gives the rest of the information such as tree details, flowering season, and origin.

Location of Origin Selection

The users can find out trees that have an origin outside India.
